You’ve done it! You’ve got an amazing shiny new website, with all the bells and whistles. Bursting with useful content, your customers will absolutely love it. But how do you get new visitors to your website? Use our WordPress SEO guide to see if you’re ticking all the search engine optimisation boxes.
Choose a keyword and stick to it
Unless you’re Google – and if you are, hi! – you can’t build a website that is everything to everyone. You’re going to have to choose your customers and create your website based on fulfilling their needs. Part of this is figuring out what they search for when they’re looking for companies like yours. These are your keywords – the particular words and phrases that you want to be found for in search engines. There are many ways to choose yours, but doing your research will ensure that you show up in the search results when it counts.
Make sure that your site is fast and furious
Your customers are impatient. They don’t like to wait for a website to load – this isn’t the 90s you know! Search engines know this as well, and they will mark down sites that are too slow, pushing them down the search rankings. To check your page speed, try Google’s Page Speed tools and Pingdom.
Don’t forget to tag!
Search engines love tags, and making sure that you complete all of them on every peg will ensure that you keep moving up the rankings. Make sure you have remembered:
- Title tags for your page
- Alt tags for images
- Meta descriptions
- Title tags on links
Are you monitoring your WordPress SEO?
Making all these changes to optimise your website is all well and good, but how do you know if you’re doing it right. WordPress is compatible with a range of free plugins to help you make the most of your SEO efforts. Here at Toast, we favour Yoast – the same plugin used by big boys like eBay and Facebook. It’s easy to use, very effective and absolutely free.
