File transfer protocol.

FTP is a method of transferring files for your website directly to the server. Sometimes this can be done via your site, and other times it’s easier to complete it via FTP.

For example, if you had an image to upload to your site, you would likely do this via your website’s media library. However, if you wanted to upload a page template, you might prefer to do this via FTP which would upload it directly to the website through the server.

WordPress developers will often ask for your FTP details if they need to modify files that can’t be reached by the editor, or if they are planning on moving your site.

To conclude...

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is a method of uploading files directly to the server, rather than via the website.
